Frizzy Hair: What Causes It and What Actually Helps
Frizz happens when individual hairs stop lying in the same direction as the ones around them and stand away from the rest of the hair. It's usually set off by humidity, mechanical stress or static, and dry, porous lengths make hair more prone to it. This guide explains what's actually happening in the fibre, why frizzy hair and curly hair are not the same thing, and which levers are worth pulling during the day and overnight.
What is frizz?
Frizz is a condition, not a hair type: individual hairs lift or coil differently from the hair around them, so the length looks unsettled rather than smooth. Any hair type can end up in that state, straight hair as readily as curly.
Frizz shows up mainly at the cuticle, the outer layer of the hair made of overlapping cells that protects the core. When it lies flat, neighbouring hairs slide past each other and the hair stays smooth. When it lifts, hairs catch on each other more easily and each one settles at a slightly different angle. Humidity also works inside the hair: water breaks some of the hydrogen bonds that hold its protein chains in shape, and those bonds re-form in a new position as the hair dries.
Frizzy hair and curly hair are different things
Curly and coily hair describe a structure: hair that grows in waves or spirals and keeps doing so however well you look after it. Frizz describes a state that comes and goes. Having curly hair does not automatically mean having frizz, and having frizz does not make hair curly.
The two get mentioned in the same breath for a reason that holds up: sebum from the scalp travels down many turns less easily than it travels down a straight length, so curly and coily hair tends towards drier lengths, and dry lengths are one of the factors that make frizz more likely. The practical difference is the useful part: care products and pillowcases can't change the structure, but you can influence the state.
What sets frizz off, and what makes it more likely

Static deserves one caveat that guides usually skip: it depends on which fibres are paired, on surfaces touching and separating, on friction and on the humidity in the room.
What helps day to day
- Don't rub wet hair. Squeeze the water out with a microfibre towel or an old T-shirt rather than rubbing hairs with a lifted cuticle against each other.
- Treat the lengths first. Leave-in products and a drop of oil belong on the length; the roots rarely need them.
- Comb less when the air is damp. Every pass adds friction and pull, and a loosely gathered braid keeps the hairs pointing the same way.
- Never brush dry, charged hair straight through. Dampen it or apply a conditioner first, then work up from the ends in sections.
One honest limit: nothing switches humidity off. What good products do is keep the surface smoother and hold hairs in the same direction, and that alone is a visible difference.
Friction at night
Your head moves across the pillowcase many times while you sleep, and that friction is hard to steer consciously. Less friction means less mechanical wear on the cuticle, and a lifted cuticle is one of the factors that make hair look frizzy and catch on itself.

One special case is worth naming: wet hair is at its most vulnerable, because the cuticle stands further open. If you tend to go to bed with damp hair, the detail sits in sleeping with wet hair.
What frizz is not
Not every hair standing away from the length is damage. Some of the short hairs on the crown are simply new growth, still too short to lie down with the rest. Those grow out and call for nothing.
Structural damage is a different matter and can't be repaired: a damaged cuticle doesn't close back up, and most care products work mainly on the surface. And no surface, pillowcase or oil changes the structure of your hair. Curly hair stays curly hair; it can only look more defined.
